FINANCIAL LITERACY

Financial Literacy for Women FLOW by Whole Woman Network

“If money is your hope for independence, you will never have it. The only real security that a man will have in this world is a reserve of knowledge, experience and ability.”
~Henry Ford~

“It is good to have money and the things that money can buy. But it is good too, to check up once in a while and make sure that you haven’t lost the things that money can’t buy.”
~George Horace Lorimer~

Why Financial Literacy For women?

The prevailing socio-economic climate makes financial literacy more relevant than ever. Financial well being is critical to in order to achieve a balanced lifestyle because it affects other areas such as; self-worth, health, mental, physical and socio-emotional states. There are many reasons why financial literacy for women is very important:

  • Increasing life expectancy among women (women outlive men by an average of 8 years)
  • Trans-generational wealth transfer (Baby boomers generation)
  • Women are increasingly becoming more educated than men
  • Social consciousness among women to give back to the community
  • Managing the different life stages: widowhood, divorce/separation, single parenthood, empty-nest etc
  • More women are becoming primary breadwinners in their families
  • More women are choosing self employment/entrepreneurship as career paths
  • Due to increasing life expectancy, more women are now in the ‘sandwich generation’; primary care-givers for their immediate families and for their parents
  • Lack of a systematic financial literacy culture leading to alarming high debt ratios and financial insecurity among women (even college educated and professional women)
  • A need to create awareness for holistic behavioural changes and leave a legacy of sound financial culture to upcoming generations.
